Since launching their company in 2018, Alexis Solomon and Taylor Price have helped over 250 homeowners overhaul more than 350 living rooms, kitchens, offices, and bedrooms. They’ve even done design work for an HGTV show pilot. Their Atlanta-based residential interior design and renovation firm, Alexis Taylor Interiors, isn’t the first fore into entrepreneurship for either of them, though.

A member of the American Society of Interior Designers and a National Council for Interior Design Qualification certification holder, Alexis owned an interior design studio for 15 years before joining forces with her now business partner. Taylor, a graduate of Vanderbilt, previously owned and operated a drapery workroom and has also worked for an international commercial interior design firm.

The pair say one thing they’ve always enjoyed about being their own bosses is the ability to pivot quickly when things aren’t working. There are minimal hoops to jump through, and what’s best for the client can always stay the top priority. “If we see a better way of doing something, we can change it. We’re constantly striving to offer the best services to our clients, and as business owners, we have the control to always be improving,” explains Taylor.

Changing the Game

One of the most impactful ways they serve clients is through how they handle the entire business of working with a professional for an interior design project and/or renovation. For one, clients are free from uncertainty regarding the cost of working with experts. Alexis and Taylor offer design packages with clear pricing and definite deliverables, plus varying degrees of detail, allowing them to meet the needs of a multitude of clients and ensuring clarity among everyone. They also don’t receive a commission from any referrals they make, so clients can trust their recommendations.

“We love helping our clients solve problems,” says Taylor. “Design is not just about pretty things – it's about making spaces more functional and enjoyable. Beautiful design is useless if it doesn't work well. Every client is different, and we love helping figure out what is the best design solution for them specifically.”

And instead of clients having to partner with them for the project once the plans and vision for it are complete, they can choose to forge ahead on their own (hiring contractors, making their own purchases, etc.) or have Alexis and Taylor walk alongside them during the process of turning the ideas into reality.

Managing Growing Pains

The duo’s approach has been popular, spurring growth in all areas of their business. Handling that expansion has required Taylor and Alexis to take on some large internal projects. Though they’ve always been the types to narrow in on what they do best and are most passionate about and hand the rest to a support team, adding the right people to that team, wrapping their heads around project management software, and taking marketing out-of-house were not easy feats. Now the pair say they’ve built a dream team of sorts and advise other entrepreneurs to prioritize having support from the very beginning.

They’ve also sought assistance in taking their business to the next level. Because, as they say, “no one is an expert in everything,” the pair have hired coaches and professional services to aid with business elevation.

Their recent Personal Branding Experience with CatMax Photography is another way they’ve poured back into the firm. “People buy from people they like, know, and trust. It's so important that clients and potential clients get to know you. A branding shoot is a great (and efficient) way to get great photos that support that connection with your audience,” says Taylor.

It was the women’s first branding photo shoot, and the extensive planning provided with the package ensured that it was a success, and the pair received a swath of winning photos. Some of their favorites among the selections include those that capture the reality of most of their days as busy full-time working moms – taking care of business in jeans! “We love that Catrina still made us look put together and polished, even in our casual clothes,” they say. They’re thrilled that the branding shoot was able to showcase them as approachable yet also professional – their ultimate goal.
