Mixing Styles, Breaking Design Rules, and More with Lyn Reaves of L. Reaves Interiors: Tuesday Q&A

With the Tuesday Q&A series, CatMax Photography introduces you to exceptional entrepreneurs who have gone through the CatMax Personal Branding Experience.

Today, we’re featuring Lyn Reaves, founder of L. Reaves Interiors. Following multiple remodels of her own houses and even a few builds, the former catering business owner decided to pursue her passion for interior design professionally and launched her company six years ago.

In this post, we dive into how she creates spaces that feel like home, the people who’ve inspired her, the details of her Personal Branding Experience, and more.

How would you describe the L. Reaves Interiors brand?

Classic through and through. Personable and professional, but we’re going to have some fun, too.

Tell us more about how you mix old and new styles to create a space that reflects the client’s design style.

Our design style is transitional, which in my mind means, updated traditional. This style makes it easy to add in antiques or sentimental items as well as adding touches of a “secondary style” such as modern, midcentury, or rustic. Mixing the old with the new is what makes a house feel like a home and like it evolved over time.

Are there any current design trends/ideas that you’re a fan of?

I’m thrilled that color has made a comeback! Anything from a subtle touch of blush to a room painted floor to ceiling with a dark forest green, I’m a fan.

Are there any design rules you love to break?

Wood tones do not need to match! I cannot tell you the amount of times I have to remind a contractor or others in the industry of this. Matching wood tones will date the space quicker. This goes for mixing metals as well.

What’s one of your favorite client projects of all time and why?

That’s a tough one, but if I had to choose, I would have to say a basement remodel we completed in 2022. These clients wanted a man cave that would also function as an office and a place for the family to hang out. More often than not, challenges turn into creative design ideas, and this project had several, such as lots of columns and awkwardly shaped alcoves.

Do you have a new (or tried and true) tool you love using in your business?

I’ve had a laser measure for a few years, and I love it. It’s small enough to easily carry in my bag and can act as a “pointer” when talking to clients and contractors. Of course, I have the trusty tape measure with me at all times as well.

Who are some of your design/business role models?

My biggest role model in business and in life would be my Dad. I watched how he treated his customers and do my best to mimic that. Most of my other “role models” per se are people I learn from and admire from a distance. Mostly, designers who have a somewhat similar story and have grown a business with drive and ambition along with a healthy dose of humility.

What were your goals for your Personal Branding Experience?

I wanted shots that reflected who I am and how I work. People want to see the face behind the brand and feel as if they know them.

How do you plan to use the photos?

Social media, website, welcome packet, and any print advertisements.

What advice would you give to someone planning a branding photo shoot?

First, take the plunge and do it! Do some planning and decide where you want the photos and style/stage those spaces appropriately. Hire a stylist for your hair and makeup. Basically, do plenty of planning in advance so you will be more relaxed during your shoot.

Finally, can you share a fun fact about yourself?

I am a recovering Tab-aholic. Coke quit selling Tab during the pandemic, and it was a REAL struggle for me.
